One Lucky Mama: North Carolina Single Mom of 4 Holds $188 Million Winning Lottery Ticket

You have to wonder each time you stand behind someone buying a lotto ticket at your local grocer if they will be the winner. And if it were you… imagine that? You think to yourself, oh how life would change…what would I even do with that much money?

Well that’s exactly what is going through the mind of one well-deserving 26-year-old North Carolina mama of four who recently discovered that she held the golden ticket - a $188 million dollar winning Powerball ticket that is. Now how’s that for a good day?

Marie Holmes worked at both Walmart and McDonalds but needed to quit her jobs in order to care for her children, one of which has cerebral palsy. When asked if she is ready to deal with that much money, Holmes replied,

“I’m ready for it. I’m ready to embrace the change. I’m very grateful for what’s about to happen for my family.”

NBC reports that Holmes was shocked when she discovered she was the winner.

“I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I saw the ticket and checked it,” she said.

Her plan is to give part of the winnings to her church, buy a new home and set up college funds for the kids.

Before taxes, the winning ticket would be worth $188 million paid over 30 years or $127 million if the winner decides to take it all in one single payment. The remaining winning tickets were sold in Texas and Puerto Rico but neither have been claimed yet.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

  1. This is a great story and I am very glad the lottery has changed this single woman’s life! She is very well deserving of her winnings. It also makes me happy to read how she is planning on spending her money.
