Building A Mommy Workout Routine That’s Right for You

Regular exercise is something everyone strives to achieve. For some, it comes naturally, while for most (let’s face it), it’s daunting. Whether you’re a working mom or stay-at-home mom, busy commitments almost always make working out especially challenging. Here are a few tips that will help you get into a routine – or back into a routine – that is right for you.

Don’t go out of your way

Try to pick a workout spot that is within reasonable proximity to your daily location (home or work). It’s much easier to stick to exercise routines nearby than ones that are 20 minutes or more away.

Schedule it into your day

Whether you are a working mom or stay-at-home mom, your busy lifestyle is a powerful thing. Don’t let it get the best of your health.  Take out your calendar and pencil in at least 30 minutes a day for exercise. If conflicts arise (oh, and I promise they will), open your calendar back up and try to move your workout to a later time or swap your off days.

Don’t run just because everyone else does

If you wake up and find yourself dreading a run on the treadmill, do yourself a favor and look for other exercises you will enjoy more. One day you may choose to go for a long walk or run with the stroller, while the next you decide to hit the pool or ocean for a swim. I personally play hockey with a bunch of moms two mornings a week and in the summer try to surf or paddleboard when the waves are good. Try your best to make working out a fun hobby and the odds of you actually making time for fitness will be much greater.

Pump yourself up with upbeat tunes or get a good book on tape

When you are able to tune out and take your mind off the actual workout at hand, things become much easier. It may help to spice up your workout with a hot playlist. Just try to remember to add songs regularly so it doesn’t become a “routine”. Another excellent way to get through a workout is with a juicy book on tape. There are so many sites that allow you to simply download books to your phone, making this an excellent tandem workout distraction.

Find a mom workout buddy

Break up your daily workout routine with some social interaction. Find a mom near you who shares a similar schedule and pencil in a regular workout with her. This is an excellent way to stay motivated while making exercise fun and social.

Get outside!

As the trees begin to bloom, borrow some of Mother Nature’s energy and enjoy a few workouts outdoors. The fresh air and vitamin D are great for your health and mind. Just remember to slap on plenty of suntan lotion to keep your skin looking smooth, young, and vibrant.

Involve the kiddos

Whether the kids are 3 months old or 13, as moms, we often find ourselves trying to work our personal schedules around our children. The great thing about exercise is that it can almost always involve the whole family. Find a gym with daycare services or bring the kids along for your next outdoor workout.  Heck – find other local moms with kids your kids’ ages and make it a playdate workout or leave the kids with your mom friend while you go workout and then return the favor. The more involved your children are in exercise at a young age, the better the chance they will continue these habits as they grow. This all starts with them watching you, their #1 role model.

Good luck, ladies! And if you have more motivational tips for moms out there looking to get back in shape, we would love to hear from you!
